William Morris...influenced or an influence?

William Morris, one of the most brilliant and innovative progenitors of modern graphic design. William Morris, a craftsman, a designer, a writer, a typographer, and a Socialist.

William Morris, a man who was influenced by writers and architecture who were railing against the degradation caused by the industrial revolution. A man influenced by the Middle Ages…are we not all influenced by something or the other for the things we do? Are we not influencing people to do things as well as they influencing us?

Design is the same, we are influenced for what we want design to be or what to design. Design in turn is influenced by us-what we want or what we want design to “do” for us.

If William Morris, a man now who is remembered by all, whose design is influenced by sole interests that became a new style, a new trend perhaps you may call it-can we do the same? With so much outside influences from the world, from our society, can we re-design design? Are we, ourselves not trying to dig up something from deep within us to show and share with the rest of the world, for everyone to appreciate?

Design is not just designed for things to look good, for things to suit people’s likings or to make a product stand out from the crowd. Design is for people to appreciate and to express their own influences. Look around yourself, look at what people are wearing, and look at how buildings are designed. There is not a single thing that is not influenced by another.
